Pay as you throw trash disposal programs
I recently spoke with a friend about his town’s sanitation program. It’s a a pay as throw program where as the residents go to the local transfer station and pay per bag of trash. It appears to be an effective incentive for recycling. In this town, the recyables are picked up at residence’s home – that’s another incentive – less stuff to haul to the dump. This friend also composts which cuts down on the amount of trash he has to pay to dump. Sounds like a pretty good system

My town has a pay as you throw program also but they don’t pick up recycling…great idea.
Another “incentive” I’d like to see towns or the state offer is money for bottles and cans. We have family in Long Island, NY and they as well as most of our neighboring states, have such a program. It might deter some people from throwing their bottles and cans out the window!!!

Lori,
Thanks for the reply. There are some many things that towns could be doing better. So Long Island gives money for bottles and cans… that’s cool. It definitely gives people some incentive. I think if you go to a market like stop and shop, you might be able to deposit cans into a machine and get money.
