Reduce, REUSE, Recycling

It’s not just about recycling things.  What’s also very important is that we reduce our amount of waste and that we reuse as much as possible.  There are many creative ways of reusing items.  Here are some of ones I practice:

  • Reuse the plastic bags that items come in like bread bags, deli meat bags, the bags inside of cereal boxes.
  • Reuse containers like the ones from takeout food, yogurt containers, milk containers, coffee cans, etc.
  • For planting, reuse the containers that plants come in and use other items that you might normally throw away – an old wheelbarrow, a basket, etc.

If you have children there lots of ways to reuse everyday items instead of just throwing them away.

  • Use milk containers or soda bottles as homemade birdfeeders.
  • Decorate coffee cans and use them for storing crayons, pencils, etc.
  • Use paper that’s printed on one side for coloring and other arts and crafts.
  • Paint/decorate an old item like a stool or a chair
  • Use leftover paint from home projects for decorating items and arts/crafts projects
  • Use an old sheet or a shower curtain as a drop cloth for messy projects

There are many, many, many more things that we can find other uses for.  What kinds of things do you reuse?
